Scent of gold

The scent of gold

Made old friends foes

The clink of the coins

Made the nobles dance like silly boys

The merchants gifted diamonds to their wives

And the miners could give only some coins

The scent of the gold

Spread along all the roads

Luring every man and woman

When scent grew bold

Every man bowed

Old, young and the fool

Dug graves for one another

Only to smell a pinch of a gold

They traded their lives

For some coins of gold

They traded their morals as well

And yet they prayed to the gods for this folly

Assuming they are the kindest of all
